Why We Dig 3-D

Mammograms save lives. 3D Mammography saves MORE lives. Enough said.

If a picture can say a thousand words, imagine if a picture can save thousands of lives. That’s the short and sweet of 3D mammography – it saves lives by improving the chances of early breast cancer detection by nearly 40 percent. During Breast Cancer Awareness month, that’s something we can all celebrate!

Roper St. Francis is pleased to offer this advanced new mammography technology, which is FDA approved and also covered by Medicare. In addition to improving early detection rates, it can help lower the anxiety many of us experience when we get a call-back after our mammogram for “additional screening” to try to get a better picture and rule out what may appear suspicious but is often just a blurry image. With 3D, you get a clearer, more precise image the FIRST time, with greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities. For women with dense breast tissue, 3D mammography (also called “digital breast tomosynthesis” if you want to get official) is especially helpful and recommended.

The other good news is that this more accurate image comes with no additional radiation exposure.

So, yes, it’s October. The world is pink, and you need to schedule your annual mammogram. Do it for you and especially for those whose world depends on you. Your kids, by the way, love 3D movies. Now you can love 3D, too!

Roper St. Francis offers 3D mammography at our Breast Care Centers at Roper Hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Mount Pleasant Hospital. Call (843) 402-5000 to schedule your mammogram today or visit us online at www.rsfh.com/mammo.
